How has English or language served as an empowerment tool for you?
"As someone who grew up in the southern part of the Philippines, specifically the Northern Mindanao region, knowing how to speak English has helped me in doing things that I’m
passionate about in life. One of the things that I am very passionate about is my involvement with Each One Teach One Foundation (EOTO) which I co-founded when I was 10 years old. Its goal is to mentor young girls in poverty living in rural areas of the Philippines about entrepreneurship, leadership, and fellowship. I wouldn’t be able to voice out this advocacy nor be a role model to the young girls if it was not about knowing how to speak a universal language. When my team and I conduct research about EOTO, market or communicate and develop connections with other organizations online, we can definitely say that English is very crucial for our growth. As a young lady, I always feel empowered when I am heard and understood by people coming from different cultures, backgrounds, and nationalities. It allows me to educate and invest in myself, so that I can continue to work towards my potential without any limitations. All in all, I believe that the English language opens a lot of doors for opportunities as well possibilities."
